3 Things I consider when approaching any Commercial Garden Design Project:
-
Hardiness and Maintenance: Commercial spaces, especially those with high foot traffic like office parks or public courtyards, need gardens that can endure constant use and minimal upkeep. I tend to choose plants and materials that are not only robust but also low-maintenance. So this means choosing hardy, drought-resistant plants and durable landscaping materials that can handle the daily wear and tear of commercial environments without deteriorating quickly.

-
Safety Considerations: Safety is really important in any commercial setting, where visitors, employees, or clients may be wandering around the grounds daily. This requires careful planning to avoid plants that may be toxic, have thorns, or create tripping hazards. Paths and surfaces must also be designed to prevent slips and falls, so I design non-slip, even surfaces for walkways and paths, making sure I create a safe environment for everyone who visits or works in the space.

-
Functionality and Flexibility: Commercial gardens often need to serve multiple functions, from providing outdoor break areas to spaces for events or simply enhancing the building's facade. The design must be adaptable to these varied uses while also contributing to the overall aesthetic and environmental goals of the space. Using movable features like benches and large potted plants is a great way to create flexible layouts.
